Expanding an Icon

The Houston Zoo’s new 5-story, 145,925 SF Headquarters serves a dual purpose, bringing together administrative staff and offering parking solutions to alleviate the demand on public parking spaces for Zoo visitors. The interior design centralizes staff offices with the inclusion of conference rooms, break areas, office suites, and a multimedia production studio. Environmentally friendly features include an above-ground storage tank, emphasizing responsible resource management, and an employee garden equipped with a cistern tank for rainwater irrigation contributing to the overall green footprint of the building. As a major Houston attraction located in the Texas Medical Center, meticulous planning and a carefully orchestrated logistics plan ensured the safety of both visitors and resident animals while keeping the Zoo operational throughout construction. Early partnerships were established to coordinate material deliveries, and strict safety measures were implemented to maintain the integrity of ongoing zoo activities. A key objective of the project is to attain a LEED Silver Certification, reflecting the Zoo’s dedication to environmental stewardship.
