simultaneously over an eight month period.
O’Donnell/Snider Construction (OSC) completed a complex, multi-phase hospital expansion and patient room build-out at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center, delivering three separate healthcare construction projects simultaneously within a fully operational hospital environment.
Over an eight-month period, OSC managed the phased build-out of three patient care units designed to expand the hospital’s capacity and support growing patient demand throughout The Woodlands and surrounding communities.
The project included:
• 10 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patient rooms
• 11 TIRR (The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research) patient rooms
• 36 Medical-Surgical (Med Surg) patient rooms
As a first-generation build-out, the project transformed shell space into fully functional patient care environments while maintaining uninterrupted hospital operations. Construction activities were carefully coordinated to ensure patient safety, minimize disruption to staff and visitors, and maintain continuous healthcare services throughout the duration of the project.
Working within an active healthcare facility requires extensive preconstruction planning, logistics coordination, infection control measures, and ongoing communication with hospital leadership and facility operations teams. OSC implemented detailed phasing strategies to support construction across multiple floors simultaneously while protecting the hospital’s day-to-day operations.
To further support schedule efficiency, each phase of the project was permitted independently and underwent separate reviews and inspections by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). This approach allowed completed areas to be turned over and occupied without delaying subsequent phases, helping Memorial Hermann bring critical patient care spaces online as quickly as possible.
Despite the challenges associated with occupied hospital construction, multiple regulatory inspections, and concurrent build-out activities, OSC successfully delivered all three phases according to the hospital’s schedule requirements. Each patient care unit opened on time, allowing Memorial Hermann The Woodlands to expand its capacity and continue providing exceptional care to the growing community it serves.
As a trusted Houston healthcare contractor, OSC specializes in hospital expansions, build-outs, ICU construction, rehabilitation facility construction, occupied healthcare renovations, and phased healthcare projects. This project demonstrates OSC’s ability to execute complex healthcare construction while maintaining operational continuity, regulatory compliance, and a commitment to patient-centered outcomes.
